The Queensland Branch of the Australian Republican Movement is a fully democratic body formed in 1994 with one objective: to make Australia a republic with an Australian as head of state in place of the Queen and her representative in Australia, the governor-general.

The ARM has developed a plan for the way forward to an Australian republic. Some of your questions are answered here:

What will the Republic look like? What “model” is the ARM pushing?

We want an Australian as Australia's Head of State! There are many possible ways to select or elect this person, and the ARM isn't pushing any particular model, but has taken the lead in promoting public discussion of the various possibilities. Check out the "Six Models" document on the National ARM website, to see a good range of models, but note that this document is evolving – come back again in a few months! And if you have some feedback for us, or a better idea for choosing our Head of State, please let us know !

How can we get to the Republic from where we are now?

The ARM has led a wide-ranging discussion, within our membership and also in the wider community, to work out the best and most democratic process for moving towards a constitutional referendum on the Republic. The National website has general information on "The Process" and also has a more recent document summarising the result of all this consultation, in the ARM submission to the Senate Inquiry into an Australian Republic .

Why should Australia be a Republic?

  • Because we're worth it!
  • Because our Head of State should be one of us.
  • Because the people of a proud and free land should be citizens, not subjects.
  • Because our leaders should swear allegiance to us, not to a foreign monarch.
  • Because the monarchy is inherently undemocratic and discriminatory.
  • Because our current system, with only the Prime Minister appointing the Governor-General, to represent the Queen and carry out her duties as Head of State, is broken and needs to be fixed.
  • And probably a few hundred other reasons.
